Want to make your next race your best race ever? 

The days are getting a little less hot and humid, and the mornings are feeling crisper than they have in months.

This can only mean one thing – RACE SEASON IS HERE!

I know many of you have already run plenty of races, ridden hundreds of miles, or competed in a plethora of triathlons. But, there’s something special about fall racing season.

If you’ve got a big race coming up, here are a few tips to make sure you have the best experience possible.

5 Tips for your BEST RACE EVER!

1. Train for the race.

I know that sounds a little silly, but it’s huge! 

If your race is at 7:00 a.m., make sure a few of your training runs leading up to the race have been at 7:00 a.m. If the half-marathon you signed up for is in the mountains, please make sure you’ve done some hill running.

Make at least a few of your training runs as close to a “race day” scenario as possible. Get up at the same time. Eat the same breakfast. Start at the same time. And so on.

The more prepared you feel, the more relaxed you’ll be – and the better you’ll do.

2. Don’t do anything new.

This is a lot like the first tip, but goes a little further.

Make sure the shoes you’re running in are your favorite running shoes. Don’t wear new socks.

Pass on the oatmeal and peanut butter bagel if you haven’t eaten the same thing before any training runs. Don’t carry a water belt with you if you haven’t done it before.

And, please don’t decide on race day that some Gu or Accel Gel is a good idea if you haven’t tried them already! PLEASE!

3. Warm Up

Again – make sure it’s a warm up you’ve tried before. But, make sure you warm up!

An awesome warmup can be found HERE that is great for any type of race – running, swimming, triathlon, cycling, etc.

A typical warm-up lasts about 5 minutes and should just be enough to get you sweating and feel looser and ready to go!

4. Find a buddy

If you’re in this race by yourself, there’s a good chance you don’t have to be.

Some people have running groups or mobs of friends they do races with. But, a ton of people sign up for these races by themselves.

But that doesn’t mean you have to run the whole thing alone!

Find a buddy who seems to be keeping the same pace as you want to. This helps spur both of you on. Having a little encouragement along the way is a great thing!

Sometimes your buddy will have to switch. You speed up, they need a break, or whatever the reason. Don’t be afraid to find a new buddy when you’re ready.

5. Have fun!

I saved the most important for last.

I’m as competitive as the next person, but let’s get real for a minute. I am NEVER going to actually win one of these things, especially if a monetary prize is involved. Maybe you’re super fast and your shoe contract is in the mail, but I’d say most of us are buying our own gear.

Instead of getting worked up and stressed out about it – ENJOY IT!

Laugh a little. Chat with your buddy. High five some spectators. Live it up!

Everything is better when you’re having fun – especially exercise!
