Last week I shared with you what I know to the BEST COFFEE EVER! Of course, it just so happens to be the only coffee I can stand to drink, but that’s beside the point.
I was out of town this weekend, so I have not been able to enjoy the warm, yummy goodness that is my new found friend for 3 days. I didn’t suffer any caffeine withdrawals or anything, but I did miss my coffee. Had I grown to like coffee that much?
As I thought about that question, it all started to make sense. I’ve begun to enjoy the routine of sipping my caramel coconut crunch while spending quiet time with God, reading, or writing. I’ve enjoyed the time with my morning pal.
It has become warm, comfortable, and something I look forward to, and I missed THAT.
I often feel the same way with God. I will admit there are days when I let busy get the best of me. I am not perfect, as much as I hate to admit it, and I fail. I fail to make time for God.
I may have realized I forgot to do an assignment and got started on it right away instead of giving God His time first. Or, I’ve been tired from a long day the day before and slept in, making my time already crunched to get ready for work and failing to pause for prayer.
Or, on a weekend, I know I have all day so I put it off until “later,” ya know…”so I can really focus.” Of course, if you’re like me, you know later never comes.
Just like three days without my coffee, when those times happen I can’t help but think, “I’m missing something!”
I’m missing the warm comfort of time spent with my friend. I’m missing the quiet peace that comes when I sit alone with Him. I’m missing the joy that comes from a one-on-one conversation with the One who first loved me.
Yes, silly as it may sound, I will admit I do feel joy and warmth and comfort when I spend time sipping my coffee each morning. But, I can assure you the joy my coffee gives is nothing compared to the cornucopia of contentment I feel in the presence of God.
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. – Matthew 6:6
I know I’m not going to miss out on my coffee if I can help it. I need to make sure I have that same keen awareness for when I’m missing out on time with God.
What about you? Is something missing in your life? Do you set time aside for Him? Do you get busy like me and forget? Or maybe you’re also like me and forget that giving God those few minutes back each day will bless you more than getting things done?
Take time right now and pause. Really stop. Take even just 2-3 minutes and focus completely on God. Pray without a running to-do list.
Remember, when we purpose to spend time with God, the reward is much greater than a checked off item on our to-do list. So…let’s do it.
Let’s Get F.I.T. Together!
