Watch the groom

*This is NOT my nephew and his bride

This weekend I went to my nephew’s wedding. It was a beautiful day, and despite the wedding being outside at 2:00pm in July, the weather was quite nice (Shout out to the huge shade tree and the breeze!).

My favorite thing to do at weddings is watch the groom. Others are watching the bride and checking out the dress and her gorgeous hair, but not me. I want to see his face when he gets that first glimpse of his bride. When he can’t take his eyes off of her as she comes down the aisle toward him.

On his wedding day, my nephew was so happy, so proud, and so enamored by his bride-to-be’s beauty and grace.

That moment always makes me think about Jesus Christ.

You see, when we become one with Jesus Christ by accepting His grace and forgiveness given us through His shed blood, you could say we become “engaged” to Jesus. But, when he returns for his church, THAT’s the big wedding day!

On the day Jesus returns, He won’t be able to take his eyes off of his bride. He will longingly and lovingly watch as we are finally brought together for that most joyous occasion. Nothing will take his attention off of His beautiful love.

Wow! Let that one soak in for just a minute… Read it again if you have to.

When I think about how excited and how in love my nephew looked as his beautiful bride walked to his side, I am absolutely blown away to imagine that THAT is how Jesus Christ feels about me – AND YOU!

I’d say we could just stop there with that image and go on home, but I want you to think about one more thing.

My nephew would have looked at his bride the exact same way whether she was coming down that aisle in the beautiful white, strapless gown she was wearing with her hair done just right and her makeup perfect and complimentary of her features OR if she had walked down the aisle in soccer shorts and a t-shirt, ponytail flying in the wind.

He loves her for who she is NOT for what she looked like on that day.

Jesus loves you even more than that. He loves you right now where you are. He gave His life for you that YOU might have life and have it abundantly…NOW. All you had to do was say “YES” when he offered you the ring!

But we learn in the book of Revelation that the bride of Christ will be dressed accordingly,

“Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear…”         – Revelation 19:7-8a

And as we continue to read that passage we learn how to do that,

“…(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)”  – Revelation 19:8b

You see – my niece in-law (is that a thing?) didn’t buy that beautiful dress and spend hours getting ready for her big day so that my nephew would love her. Instead, she did it all BECAUSE of how much she loves him!

We, as followers of Christ don’t have to perform righteous acts SO THAT Jesus will love us and call us His bride, but BECAUSE of our great love for Him.

So, if you are a follower of Christ, start today getting dressed for the big day. Design and put together your garment of the finest linens – the righteous acts He has called you to do – because you want to be the most beautiful bride you can be for Him.

If you aren’t sure what I’m talking about and this all sounds quite strange, then just know that right now Jesus Christ is asking you to accept the engagement ring that is eternal forgiveness through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Will you say, “Yes!”?

Let’s Get FIT Together!
