It’s time for my monthly product review, and I decided to do something a little different this month.
People ask me all the time about what the best protein powder you can buy is.
My first response is that I usually tell them the one I have bought and use in various things like my Natural Recover Drink. but sadly I couldn’t really remember why I picked the one I did.
Then I found this awesome article that looked at almost 700 different protein powders. After taking each one through their test of specific criteria, they found only 8 powders (from only 3 brands) that they gave the seal of approval to.
So, what should you look for in a protein powder?
1. Not discontinued.
This makes pretty good sense. If you can’t buy it now, it doesn’t really matter how good for you it is, does it?
2. Free of controversial food colorings.
What are those controversial food colorings?
- Red 40
- Yellow 5
- Blue 1
- Blue 2
- Caramel Color
These are listed as controversial because they have either been proven to cause or can be linked to various diseases and disorders, including cancer, hives, asthma, and hyperactivity.
Look for these in other foods and beverages you buy as well!
3. No artificial sweeteners
We should all know by now the research showing that artificial sweeteners may actually be leading to an increase in the worldwide obesity epidemic and diabetes, so why would you want them in your diet?
My assumption is if you’re looking for protein powder, you’re looking to get healthy.
So, stay away from those artificial sweeteners – not just in your protein powder but also in all your foods and beverages!
4. Verified NOT to contain steroids.
This is mostly important if you’re a competitive athlete.
Wouldn’t want to lose eligibility or have a nasty mark on your record because of your protein supplement.
5. Have a Labdoor quality grade of B- or better.
Labdoor is a company that buys supplements off store shelves and then sends them to an FDA-registered lab for testing.
Sounds great to me – let them do all the hard work!
You can also find rankings for all sorts of other supplements on their website as well.
So, who won?
Well, after all that testing, only 3 bands remained standing at the end.
2. Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey Gold Standard in natural chocolate and natural vanilla
I was also pretty excited when I realized the protein powder I have been using is on the list!!!!!!
So, if you’re looking for a healthy protein powder to take as a supplement or add to your smoothies, check these out and see what you think.
