Last year as part of our vacation, my husband and I went spear fishing.
I know what you’re thinking, “Sit on the beach and rest, ya weirdo!” Although I DO enjoy a little time spent hanging out on the beach, I’d much rather be doing something – so spear fishing was our choice this time.
Now, I can swim and all, but that whole idea of diving down to the shallow bottom with a snorkel is just not my thing, so I was a little nervous.
Our guide was fabulous, and the two main things he told me were, “Stay close to me,” and “Stay close to the chum bag.”
When I listened to him, I saw some pretty amazing things happen, and I learned this – if you want real blessings stay close to the source!
His chum bag held a concoction of oatmeal and some other stuff that would draw in the fish. When he agitated the bag, all these little pieces of oatmeal come flying out, slowly floating toward the bottom.
Those fish would go crazy!
In just a couple of minutes, at least 15-20 fish would come swarming around that chum bag. All I had to do was float patiently and let them come in nice and close, and then – I SPEARED FISH!
When I listened and stayed close to the source, I saw results.
This makes me think about John 15:5, where Jesus said,
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me, and I in you, you will bear much fruit…” – John 15:5a
Remain here means to abide or “continue to be present.” So Jesus is saying that if we continue to be present with Him – if we continue to be CLOSE to Him, THAT is when we will notice the greatest fruitfulness in our lives.
Just like that chum bag. When I remained with the chum bag and the guide who was leading us, THAT was when I experienced the true blessings – when I speared the most fish.
The second part of that verse is also pretty interesting.
“…apart from me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5b
As I stayed close to the guide, others in the group ventured off by themselves. They felt confident that they were quite capable of being successful on their own.
In case I haven’t clearly given it away yet, they were not as successful as I. When they wandered far from the source.
When they strayed from the guide, they didn’t experience the same blessings as I did.
Now, don’t misunderstand me. In no way am I saying that all your problems will be solved and you’ll have all the success and wealth you’ve ever dreamed of if you stay close to Christ – that was a promise never given to us.
Instead, what I am saying is that we are the most successful in terms of producing fruit, blessing others, reaching others for Christ, and enjoying God’s abundant blessings when we stay close to Him.
Have you noticed this in your own life?
When you’ve spent time in conversation and communion with God, everything seems to make a little better sense. You don’t necessarily feel like you’re off on your own, wandering aimlessly, searching for something.
Instead, you’re able to wait patiently by the source. You’re able to rest in the knowledge that God will bring the blessings to you if you’ll just stay nearby, listen quietly, and be ready.
So, where are you right now? Are you waiting patiently by the source, preparing yourself to be ready when the time is right?
Or, are you wandering around aimlessly, endlessly searching for something you may or may not find?
If that second person is you, I urge you to slow down and get closer to God. Spend time in His word. Spend time talking AND listening!
Stay close to the source, and watch as the blessings come to you!
Let’s Get FIT Together!
PRAYER: Father, I pray that you will show me how to be closer to you. You promised us that if we would draw close to you, you would draw close to us. I pray that as I spend time reading your word, you would reveal your truth to me, and as I spend time in prayer, speak to me. Help me understand the greatness of who you are.
