My husband and I celebrated our anniversary this past weekend at the beach. Who doesn’t love the beach, right?
The beach is an awesome thing in itself with so many amazing examples of God’s beauty and His love for us that I could write the next several weeks of blogs about it (and I just might), but one particular story really stood out to me.
I’ve had a metal detector for a couple of years, but I haven’t had a lot of opportunities to use it, so I took it with me. We’d been there three days, and I finally decided I would take it with me that night. I found a few little things – mainly tent stakes and bottle caps, but nothing of any significant value. I gave up and moved on the sitting with my feet in the water.
A little while later a young man came up and asked if we could help him. His friend’s wedding band flew off her finger while shaking out their blanket and was now nowhere to be found.
I, of course, was super pumped – not because she had lost her ring (I realize that sounded bad) but because I was going to get to use my toy – I mean tool – for good.
They continued to search the area where they thought it might be while I swept my toy across the sand. At first, nothing. Then one beep. Then two! Then…whole bunch of beeping!
I dug in the sand beneath the awesome beeping and found her prized possession just a couple of inches below the surface! She was so excited! I think I was almost just as excited.
So many metaphors and parallels for Christ’s love for us rush to mind as I recount this story, but as this is a blog primarily about fitness and healthy living, I’ll tackle those first.
You see, in your journey of lifelong fitness, you will be either of the players in the story.
Some days, you are the woman who has lost her way. You were getting along pretty good, doing everything right, but then something came up – injury, busyness, holidays, more holidays, etc.
You’ve been trying to figure out how to get it back on your own, but really what you need is a little help from someone who has the right tools – physician, physical therapist, personal trainer, nutritionist, or just a really good friend to help you out.
Having a fresh outlook and the right tools can make a huge difference.
And sometimes, you’re the “me” in this story. You’re the friend who has the new, fresh set of eyes and the right tools, and someone has come to you asking for help.
I believe, as in every aspect of life, we are blessed to, in turn, bless someone else.
If you have successfully emerged from similar struggles as your friends, help them out. If you have encouraging words, tips and tricks, or the time to work out with them, share them. You might be the one that helps them find their way back – their prized possession.
You might also be my new friend from the story in your spiritual walk. You can’t seem to find what you’re looking for. You’re digging around everywhere, but all you’re doing is getting sand all over you.
Well, friends, the tool you need is the Word of God. Pick up your Bible and use it to seek after God. It might not happen immediately, but as you use His Word to sweep over the sands in your life, you will eventually hear that tell tale beeping that let’s you know He’s there and He’s listening.
Jesus, himself tells us:
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. (Matthew 7:7 NIV)
Seek God daily for all the guidance you need in your life. Share what you’ve learned with others. And always use the right tools.
