Are you one of those people who doesn’t always know how to appreciate the help? 

Do you hate to ask anybody to help you? Would you rather do just about anything yourself than rely on someone else to help you do it? After all, you don’t want to bother anybody.

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, welcome to the club. I am the president.

I’m not necessarily proud of it, but too often that’s me. 

I’ve found there are some problems with not seeking out or knowing how to appreciate the help someone else can provide.

I love to ride bicycles, and my husband and I ride together pretty often. We’re both close in cycling “ability,” so neither of us has to tone it down so as not to run the other in the ground.

This morning we went for a ride, and something pretty interesting occurred to me. 

See, when cycling with someone else, there’s this amazing thing called drafting. What that means is that you experience a lot less wind resistance when riding closely behind the person in front – who is pulling.

And decreased wind resistance = quite a bit less effort on your part to go just as fast as the person pulling.

In case you can’t tell, drafting is my favorite part!

When I first started riding, that wasn’t true. I wanted to prove I was good. I wanted to be in the front as much as possible. Or, I would ride beside my husband and the other people we rode with to show them I was just as fast as they were. (I’m a touch competitive.)

I didn’t appreciate the help drafting provided because I thought of it as “cheating,” so I didn’t want to do it.

I now know how silly that is.

When my husband and I ride together now, we take turns pulling and drafting. We learned pretty early on that when we ride that way, we are able to ride much faster and not get near as tired as trying to do it all on our own.

Some days I’m the one pulling up the hill, and other days I need all the help being tucked behind my husband can give me. Occasionally my legs feel fresher than his, and I feel strong and powerful as I lead the way. Other times – not so much.

It’s funny how that’s exactly how life is.

Sure, you can try to do it all on your own, but that just makes you really tired. You might be successful and feel accomplished, but you’ll never reach the potential you could with the help of others.

The author of Proverbs put it this way,

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17

There will be days when you struggle to get up those hills. If you only had someone willing to lead the way and pull you up, you could make it.

But there will also be days when you’re the one with the “fresh legs,” and someone else needs to tuck in behind you and follow you toward their goals. They need you to help them through this struggle or that difficulty.

That’s the beauty of it all.

When riding in a line of multiple riders, everyone takes their turn in the front – pulling everyone else along. Then they drop off and let the pack pull them for a while until it’s their turn again.

You learn to appreciate the help when you need it because you know someone else will need you one day.

There’s one more really cool thing, though.

I didn’t realize until I did some research that the rider who is pulling actually gets a little “push” from the riders drafting as well. When the front rider pulls, the rider drafting creates a little low-pressure air bubble that helps propel the front rider forward.

I was blown away when I read that because I thought how many times in life I’ve felt pushed forward when I was helping someone else. Seeing someone achieve their goals because of some help I’ve provided drives me to do even more and be even better.

So, being there to pull someone else along during their struggle actually helps push you along when things get tough as well. 

Let’s appreciate the help someone else gives us when we need it. Be willing to give someone else help when they’re struggling. And, appreciate the help we provide because it actually makes things a little better for us, too.
